The Importance of Cancer Screenings

June 2, 2025

Cancer screenings are one of the most important steps you can take to protect your health. Many cancers can be detected early, often before symptoms even appear, giving you a better chance of successful treatment. Staying up-to-date with recommended cancer screenings is a key part of maintaining your well-being.

Of course, always contact your doctor if you notice unusual changes to your health, find a lump or consistently ‘don’t feel good.’ Paying attention to even subtle changes can help catch issues before they become serious.

The following are key screenings that can help catch precancerous changes or early cancer.*

Breast Cancer Screening (Mammograms)

For women, mammograms are the gold standard for detecting early changes in breast tissue and breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends women aged 40 and older have annual mammograms, or sooner if you have a family history or other risk factors. Early detection can lead to more effective treatment options and better outcomes. If you notice any changes to your breast, including a lump, contact your doctor. And, remember, that men also are diagnosed with breast cancer so should be mindful of changes to the breast area.

Colon Cancer Screening (Colonoscopy)

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. Starting at age 45, adults should begin regular screenings, typically through a colonoscopy. This test can detect precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer, and if necessary, your doctor can remove them during the procedure. There are other types of screening tools, including stool samples, that may be considered for low-risk patients.

Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., and regular skin checks by your doctor or dermatologist can help catch early signs of melanoma or other skin cancers. If you notice any changes to your skin, including unusual spots or rashes, contact your doctor.

Lung Cancer Screening

For individuals at high risk due to smoking history, lung cancer screenings are crucial. Low-dose CT scans are recommended for adults aged 50–80 who have smoked heavily and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Early detection of lung cancer can lead to better treatment options and improved outcomes.

Cervical Cancer Screening (Pap Smear and HPV Test)

Women should begin cervical cancer screenings at age 21 with a Pap smear. At age 30, HPV testing may also be recommended. These screenings can detect changes in cervical cells that may lead to cancer, allowing for early intervention. You can also talk to your doctor about receiving the HPV vaccine, which is approved for male and female adults up to age 45. This vaccine helps protect against HPV, which can lead to six different cancer types.
